How to Audit Your AI Search Visibility in 30 Minutes (Free)

A step-by-step guide to running a basic AI visibility audit using free tools - 10 prompts, a scoring template, and benchmarks for what good looks like.

How to Audit Your AI Search Visibility in 30 Minutes (Free)

You don’t need expensive tools to understand how AI engines see your brand. This guide gives you a 30-minute audit process using only ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini - three AI engines you can access for free.

By the end, you will have a baseline AI Visibility Score and a clear picture of whether AI engines recommend your product, your competitor, or neither.

Step 1: Define Your Audit Queries (5 Minutes)

Write 10 buying-intent queries that your ideal customer would ask an AI engine. These should be:

  • Category queries: “What’s the best [your category]?”
  • Comparison queries: “Compare [your product] vs. [competitor]”
  • Use case queries: “[Your category] for [specific use case]”
  • Recommendation queries: “Recommend a [your category] for [company type]”

Example for a project management tool:

  1. “What’s the best project management tool for startups?”
  2. “Compare Asana vs. Monday.com vs. Linear”
  3. “Best project management tool for remote teams”
  4. “Recommend a lightweight PM tool for engineering teams”
  5. “What PM tool do Y Combinator startups use?”
  6. “[Your product] vs. [Competitor] for agile development”
  7. “Top project management tools 2026”
  8. “Best free project management tool”
  9. “Project management tool with good Slack integration”
  10. “What project management tool should a 20-person startup use?”

Step 2: Run the Queries (15 Minutes)

Open three tabs: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. For each of your 10 queries:

  1. Ask the query in each engine
  2. Document:
    • Was your brand mentioned? (Yes/No)
    • Was your brand recommended? (Yes/No - “recommended” means the AI explicitly suggested your product, not just listed it)
    • Was the description accurate? (Yes/Partially/No)
    • Which competitors were mentioned?

Use a simple spreadsheet to track results.

Step 3: Score Your Visibility (5 Minutes)

For each query across each engine (30 total data points):

ResultScore
Explicitly recommended with accurate description3
Mentioned with accurate description2
Mentioned with inaccurate description1
Not mentioned0

Calculate your AI Visibility Score:

  • Sum all scores
  • Divide by maximum possible (30 queries x 3 points = 90)
  • Multiply by 100

Example: If your total score is 27 out of 90, your AI Visibility Score is 30/100.

Step 4: Interpret Your Results (5 Minutes)

AI Visibility ScoreInterpretation
70-100Strong AI search presence - focus on optimization and competitive defense
40-69Moderate presence - significant room for improvement, clear quick wins available
20-39Weak presence - you are mostly invisible in AI search, systematic GEO needed
0-19No presence - AI engines don’t know you exist, foundational work required

What to Look For

Are you mentioned at all? If you scored 0 across all queries on all engines, you have a fundamental entity authority problem. AI engines don’t recognize your brand.

Are descriptions accurate? If you are mentioned but with wrong information (outdated pricing, incorrect features, misattributed capabilities), you have a brand accuracy problem. This is fixable through structured data and content optimization.

Which competitors dominate? Document which brands appear most often. Analyze their websites for structured data, content structure, and external presence. What are they doing that you are not?

Which engines are friendliest? You may have visibility on Perplexity but not ChatGPT, or vice versa. This tells you where to focus your optimization efforts.

Limitations of Manual Auditing

This 30-minute audit gives you a useful baseline, but it has limitations:

  • Point-in-time snapshot - AI engine responses change frequently. Manual auditing doesn’t capture trends.
  • Limited query coverage - 10 queries is a sample, not a comprehensive analysis.
  • No historical data - you can’t measure improvement without repeated audits.
  • Labor-intensive - running this audit monthly across 5 engines and 50 queries takes 5+ hours.

For continuous, automated monitoring across all 5 engines with historical trending and competitive benchmarking, the generative.qa dashboard provides the measurement layer that manual auditing can’t sustain.

Next Steps

If your AI Visibility Score is below 40:

  1. Implement structured data - Organization, Product, and FAQ schema markup on your key pages. This is the single highest-impact action.
  2. Deploy llms.txt - tell AI crawlers how to understand your site.
  3. Build entity authority - Wikipedia/Wikidata, industry directories, authoritative publication mentions.

If you want expert guidance, generative.qa’s GEO Readiness Audit runs this analysis across 20+ queries, 5 engines, and 3-5 competitors - and delivers a prioritized optimization plan.
